It has been a while since my last post, and this reflects the amount of PhD work I've had on recently which I've had to juggle with conferences, holidays, and teaching. I'll try to sum up the last couple of months.

I'll post here about the Economic History Society Conference.

Durham is very pretty but very hilly. I displayed once again my incredible talent for only ever walking uphill despite taking circular routes around a particular place. This proves that I exist only as a figment of the imagination of Escher. This is how I remember Durham:

I was nervous about delivering a paper to a room chock-full of proper, real-life economic historians but from my perspective it went pretty well.

This was despite having to rush through the concluding page, having spent the opening few minutes trying to relate my paper to the others in the panel (in an attempt to counter the comments from the chair which, though I'm sure were made with good humour, were in danger of bordering on snide).

I think I fielded the questions reasonably well, and once again I benefitted from the insight of the experienced scholars in attendance. The editor of the Review had a lot of positive comments too, which was encouraging, though I bet he says that to all the gals. (And there were many other excellent postgraduate papers deserving of praise too, though actual 'gals' were few and far between).

Overall the conference was enjoyable. Once again a chance to network (interesting new contacts were made, for whom time will have to be dedicated to following up), and to meet up with the folks from the Residential Workshop. Once again we did our bit for the economy by not only studying economic history but by keeping the bar (and pool table) open until the early hours.

The last night in particular was pretty adventurous as it culminated in an all-night walk around Durham. This time we managed to walk downhill as well as uphill (my Escher powers only occur when alone). Pictures:

The last one says 'I [heart] foucault'. I hope it was written by the same person who wrote 'I [heart] hip hop' on the walls of the dock in Larache, Morocco...
